WASPI Latest News: MPs Unite for Pension Justice

WASPI Latest News Today 2024

The government has not taken any serious action for a permanent solution to this problem. However, some acts have been taken that reduced this issue a little bit but still, no permanent solution has been implemented.

The DWP is expected to provide an update on the UK Government’s review of the PHSO’s final report.

A cross-party group of MPs has called for an urgent update on compensation proposals.

Over 130,000 people have signed a petition calling for fair compensation for WASPI women.

WASPI LATEST NEWS

What do WASPI women demand?

WASPI women demand that they should get compensation for the financial losses as they consider that it was the Government’s fault for not announcing the pension act before implementing it. In this way, the women had to bear strong financial losses. They had no time to save their money for the future.

So the WASPI Compensation Calculator & campaign in this regard was started in 2015 and now demands compensation funds for only those women who had to go through such a hectic and financially unstable phase.

What is WASPI?

Waspi stands for Women Against State Pension Inequality. These women were typically born between 1950 and 1959. The government of the UK implemented the Pension Act 2010 directly, which meant raising the age of the women who will receive pensions to 65. Later on the next year in 2011, the government decided to increase the age to 66 years so men and women have equal pensions along with equal ages.

Now the main problem is that the Government should have informed these women in 2005 or something before implementing this act. As this act was directly implemented the Women had to go through serious financial losses and problems as they were not ready for it if they were informed before they would plan for savings or something like that.

Some funds for a few women

The government gave funds to some of the women who were suffering financial problems due to this Pension Act but not all of them were given compensation.

Rejection of changes in the Pension Act

The government listened to the WASPI members, but they still refused to make any changes to the Pension Act. We do not negate the government and neither does WASPI as the Government only did this so women’s pension age and men’s pension age become equal. However, as described earlier, WASPI women demand compensation.

Possibilities That Might Happen

There are some possibilities that the government announce some compensation for this woman. Many current Pension Ministers inform that if this issue persists, the government has no choice but to announce funds.

There is no WASPI breaking news today live.

PHSO advises the government to compensate WASPI women

The PHSO (Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman) has officially advised the parliament of the UK to compensate the WASPI women. So we can say that there might be potentially some chances that the government announce these compensations.

The official Chairman of the WASPI campaign Angela Madden says that “the government must carry out the recommendations of the ombudsman’s report and put right this historic injustice”

How much can this compensation be?

There might be a chance that if the government announces these compensations, then they will receive a compensation ranging between $1000$ and $3000$. Some people ask when WASPI will get a compensation. There might be possibilities that will convince the government in the future.

How many women are in the WASPI campaign?

There are an estimated number of 3.8 Million women who were affected by such a change while there are 100,000 people who signed on the petition day. The number of women in this movement might force the government to achieve its ambition because as we all know majority is authority. Statements and latest news regarding WASPI

John McDonnell MP

“The Ombudsman gave Parliament the job of paying compensation to WASPI women, so we need to influence all MPs to do the right thing.”

In addition, he started a demo he said “Cant wait — compensate”

Sir Stephen Timms (Chair of the Work and Pensions Committee)

“This would mean that the less notice you had of the change and the bigger the change in your state pension age, the higher the payment you would receive. While not perfect, the advantages of such a system are that it would be: quick to administer; applying known data to a formula to determine the amount due; and relatively inexpensive.”

Lucy Powell, Commons Leader

“The Ombudsman has established that the DWP did not properly inform the WASPI generation women of the change.”

Liz Kendall, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions

“I want this resolved as quickly as possible, but this is extremely complicated. There is a lot of information to go through. We need to get it right, but I want this resolved as soon as possible.”

Angella Madden, Chairman of WASPI Campaign

“Millions of women’s retirement plans were thrown into chaos, many suffering extreme financial and mental hardship. The government must carry out the recommendations of the ombudsman’s report and put right this historic injustice.”

Hilary Simpson, WASPI Chair

“We were delighted to speak to MPs individually, ensuring they are fully aware of the need for progress on compensation as quickly as possible following the Ombudsman’s report.”

Hamza Yousaf, (Scottish Prime Minister) debates.

The Scottish Prime Minister Hamza Yousaf made a debate on the WASPI issue in the Scottish Parliament and here are the following results:

  • 75 Voters voted for full compensation.
  • 52 Voters decided to remain neutral means did not pursue a particular vote for anybody.
  • None of the voters voted against the full compensation.
  • The UK government is now being forced to compensate those women as soon as possible.

Now the UK government is being forced to do so, they gave some money to a portion of women in WASPI but not all of them. Similarly, the amount of compensation given to that specific portion of women also did not meet the financial losses and damages that those women had to face. Due to this, the famous slogan of the WASPI movement is “Can’t wait — Compensate”.
